10,000 Hours. Or My Commitment to Doing Good Work.

“That’s what separates the wheat from the chaff. That’s what makes a CEO a CEO.” - Gillian Muessig, SEOmoz

You would think Gillian Muessig, SEOmom – who was on a cycling and business tour to India and spent time in our office for the better part of a fortnight – would be talking about some esoteric and vague values such as vision, leadership. NO.

she's my mom 1She was talking about: blogging. She was referring to her son Rand Fishkin (@randfish), CEO and co-founder of SEOmoz who has been blogging every single day since the inception of the blog. No matter what happened during the day, a blog would be up at night. He blogs about what he knows best: "inbound marketing, SEO, startups & entrepreneurship". He shares all that he knows about his business and discusses all. He’s social in a true sense.

Sceptics questioned his policy of talking about business secrets out in the open which could lead to people siphoning off work. But he wasn’t worried. The response invariably was: “If they are going to do it themselves, they were never our customers; if they are our customers, they will come to us when they are going to see our expertise.”

Yes, this approach backfired sometimes. But this paid off more than it backfired. SEOmoz is one of the first, biggest and most successful online marketing communities in the world. The blog is visited by millions of viewers. If you can get published in their blog, you can coolly double the price of your services and people will be willing to pay.

And after a very public battle, they received a funding of $18 million last year.

This reminds me of my favourite blogger and a fellow libertarian Amit Varma (@amitvarma) who, unfortunately, doesn’t blog enough now and is on to bigger and better things such as writing novels and winning Poker championships. He wrote a column on 10,000 hours in 2010. He writes:

Natural talent alone isn’t enough to make you good. You have to work damn hard, and practice damn hard. Some researchers have even put a number to how many hours of practice you need to achieve excellence: 10,000 hours.

[…]

The part of the study that I find astonishing is that not only did all the top performers have over 10,000 hours of practice to their credit, but everyone who put in 10,000 hours was a top performer. The key to excellence was not natural talent, but hard work. (Caveat: this is not to say that talent doesn’t matter at all. Firstly, as the researchers pointed out, there was a minimum level of talent required to get into the Academy. Secondly, a completely untalented musician would probably not get the positive feedback for his work that would motivate him to put in 10,000 hours in the first place.)

This all leads me to conclude that, since I am in the business of communication, practice I must; specifically because, as Gillian put it: “you owe it not just to yourself but to your company to work hard and give it everything you can. Sometimes, just showing up is important.”

I promise to myself and to my company to start blogging at least once a week and increase the frequency gradually.

And since this is a meta-blog (a blog about blogging), it seems befitting to end with another blogger quote, Girish Shahane:

Film used to be a precious resource in India, to be used with care. This bred discipline among cinematographers. Once video became widely available, discipline often went out of the window. [...] I have this example before me as I inaugurate a blog -- which is free to publish and in which I can stuff endless random thoughts. I aim to bring some of [the] discipline into the inevitably looser, less formal structure of the blog.

Wish me luck. :)

My kitchen renovation started with a daunting taskтБЪ finding the perfect free online design tool. I initially felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available. I spent several days researchingтАЪ reading reviewsтАЪ and comparing features. Some platforms boasted impressive 3D rendering capabilitiesтАЪ but lacked the intuitive interface I craved. Others offered simpler designs but lacked customization options. I needed a balance of visual appeal and user-friendliness. After much deliberationтАЪ I settled on "KitchenCraft ProтАЪ" a platform recommended by a friendтАЪ Amelia. KitchenCraft Pro offered a user-friendly drag-and-drop interfaceтАЪ a wide selection of appliances and cabinetry stylesтАЪ and surprisingly detailed customization options. The initial learning curve was minimal; I was able to navigate the software and start designing within minutes. I particularly appreciated the ability to import my own images and textures to personalize the designтАЪ ensuring it accurately reflected my unique style and preferences. The free version provided ample features for my needsтАЪ although I did note that some advanced featuresтАЪ like photorealistic renderingтАЪ were reserved for paid subscriptions. HoweverтАЪ for my purposesтАЪ the free tools were more than sufficient. The decision to use KitchenCraft Pro proved to be a great oneтАЪ setting the stage for a successful and enjoyable design process. I highly recommend thoroughly researching and comparing different free online kitchen design tools before making your choiceтАЪ to ensure you find one that best suits your specific needs and skill level. Remember to look for intuitive interfacesтАЪ a wide range of optionsтАЪ and helpful tutorials or support resources.

With a satisfying L-shaped layout as my baseтАЪ I delved into the finer detailsтАЪ transforming my digital sketch into a truly personalized design. I meticulously selected cabinet styles from the extensive library offered by the softwareтАЪ opting for sleekтАЪ modern shaker-style cabinets in a warmтАЪ honey-toned oak finish. The program allowed me to visualize these choices in real-timeтАЪ rotating the cabinets to ensure they complemented the overall aesthetic. NextтАЪ I chose countertops. I initially considered graniteтАЪ but the virtual rendering showed it clashing slightly with the cabinet color. I then experimented with quartzтАЪ settling on a beautifulтАЪ light-grey option that beautifully contrasted with the oak. The software's realistic rendering capabilities were invaluable here. I spent a considerable amount of time tweaking the backsplashтАЪ finally settling on a subway tile pattern in a soft whiteтАЪ which provided a clean and classic look. Adding lighting was another key step. I strategically placed recessed lighting above the countertops and pendant lights above the islandтАЪ creating a warm and inviting ambiance. I even experimented with different flooring optionsтАЪ virtually laying down various types of tile and hardwood to see how they interacted with the rest of the design. I was particularly pleased with a light-colored oak wood floor that tied in seamlessly with the cabinetry. Beyond the major elementsтАЪ I focused on the smaller details. I carefully selected hardwareтАЪ opting for brushed nickel pulls and knobs that added a touch of sophistication. I also integrated various appliancesтАЪ choosing models based on their size and aestheticsтАЪ ensuring they fit harmoniously within the design. The software allowed me to fine-tune every aspectтАЪ from the placement of outlets to the positioning of spice racksтАЪ ensuring a highly functional and visually appealing kitchen. It was a truly rewarding processтАЪ seeing my initial concept evolve into a cohesive and detailed designтАЪ ready to be shared and potentially implemented in the real world. The level of customization was impressiveтАЪ allowing me to create a space that was uniquely mine.
pitomnikrastenij.ru B5XvZR9ny
Introduce pops of color strategically. While black and white form the foundation of your design‚ subtle hints of color can add vibrancy without overwhelming the scheme. A vibrant hand towel‚ a colorful rug‚ or a few strategically placed plants can inject personality and warmth. Consider metallic accents for a touch of glamour. Brass‚ gold‚ or chrome fixtures and accessories can add a luxurious touch‚ complementing the sleekness of the black and white palette. Don't underestimate the power of texture. Introduce varied textures through bath mats‚ towels‚ and decorative elements to add depth and visual interest; A fluffy bath mat‚ a textured vase‚ or a woven basket can create a sense of comfort and warmth.

Maintaining Your Stylish Bathroom
